Whale Wars

This is my tribute to the Animal Planet series Whale Wars, which I'm currently watching. I used the most relevant photograph I have and edited in the whale, since I don't have any of actual whales.

I believe in what they fight for and appreciate their painful efforts to stop whaling.
Gradient mapped the photograph and hand-drew the whale (I'll probably touch up the whale soon, I just put it together on a whim), then used a GIMP tool to create the abstract designs. Arranged layers accordingly.
(This is actually Tybee Island in Georgia, near Savannah. It's a beautiful, clean beach.)

My Old Home

I know it doesn't look like anything spectacular, but this was a very crucial and memorable part of my life for a few years. It's one of the many identical work stations at my old high school. PLC was my home away from home and my teachers were (and are still!) my parents away from my parent. I miss it there terribly!

Smile Pretty

Me and my girlie, Nina, in one of her rare moments of making a cute face rather than an angry one. This was a rather hard shot to accomplish, considering Nina is not a big fan of being held, and tends to look every direction but towards the camera. I love this way it turned out.

Fly Sky High!

I was so incredibly happy to get this shot! I'd been outside for a long time, surrounded by Carpenter bees (which are practically harmless, by the way, unless you step on one or grab one...), trying to get at least one of the spastic little guys in focus, let alone in view! I finally got that 'lucky shot' and captured this one, who had been following me around the whole time, hovering near me curiously.

I just love the way it silhouetted. It almost looks gigantic, too. If they were that big I'd be inside in a panic room calling the National Guard, not out taking pictures (although some people find the latter more important).

IDK?

I have no idea how I managed to capture this, or what it even is. All I can remember is taking pictures while riding in the car through a city at night. I do know that I love the way it turned out and how mysterious it feels. The texture of the 'window' patterns looks as soft as velvet.
No edits made. Used camera's prolonged exposure setting (AKA 'fireworks' setting).

Endless Break is Endless...

...but it's over now, no worries. I'm back! I was taking a sort of...mental vacation, if you will. The great thing about managing your own blog is that you get to name your hours. For me that means: Endless vacation opportunities whenever I want!

That might not be the case when I get a bigger following, though. Maybe when I get to college I'll have more opportunities to get my blog into the world. That's the plan! :)

Anyway, here's a picture that, for once, I chose at random from my albums.
Cats are one of the animal species very skilled in making human-like expressions. This girly, Rufus (we thought she was a boy at first, okay?),  is making an expression close to a smirk or a dare. To me she looks mischievous and adventurous, like she's saying, "Come on, Deylah, let's explore the mysteries of the forest!"

Beautiful Blue-Eyed Boy

I absolutely love this photo of my cat Brain. It reminds me of National Geographic or something. (Yeah, his name is Brain. When he was little he had a small head and huge ears like Brain from Pinky and the Brain XD). Credit to Heather and Matt Cosgrave for letting me borrow their professional camera again to take pictures of this pretty boy.

The lens I used is called a Portrait Lens, which is to thank for the awesome effect of Brain's face being in focus while the rest of the photo blurs out.

Hot Lava

Yes, not really an erupting volcano, but it reminds me of exploding lava. This is just a bunch of orangey lights we had hanging on a bush in my front yard. I took it by swooshing my arm while the camera took the picture.
No edits made. Captured using the camera's 'fireworks' setting.

"Photographer's Eye"

Photographers truly do see things in a different way. (Artists in general, really.) Obscure angles, interesting models, areas or objects most often looked past, etc.

As a photographer, I tend to view the world in an artistic way. It's useful because I love being able to make the most out of a normally ordinary view.

I've got near-sightedness, but my ability to quickly see things around me and react to them outweighs my impairment. You'd think having glasses would result in having bad 'tunnel-vision' but I actually tend to have fairly good peripheral vision. (You should congratulate me for spelling that right...that and 'congratulate'.)

Anyway, my point is, possessing a 'Photographer's Eye' or really 'Artist's Eye' is a yin/yang sort of thing. It's great for the reasons above, and then some. But it can be annoying at times because it's hard to turn off. I spend a lot of time walking around in different places thinking "Man, if only I had my camera--this would be a great shot." I also see people during my daily routine that I would love to use in photoshoots, but I still haven't figured out a good, non-stalker-ish way to ask strangers to model for me. Usually I worry they'll automatically think I mean nude photoshoots, which is not the case... not until it's a required class in college, anyway!

Or more often than not, when we're talking about photography, I'll end up with way too many photos to edit and sort. Since everything (in this case photos) can be a work of art if you change how you think about it or look at it (or edit it), it's often hard to decide whether you want to keep a photo or not. I spend a long time looking through my 'iffy' photos, trying to decide if they're useless or if I should keep them just because a certain edit might look good on them.

And that is why I developed a useful system...that works most of the time.

For Everyday Photos:
1) If they're out of focus when I didn't intend it, I delete it. (I break this rule sometimes when it ends up looking good blurry.)

2) If the target is cut off when I intended to center it, I delete it.

For Photoshoots:
1) If the model is out of focus, I delete it. (Also have exceptions, like when a pose and expression is exactly what I wanted but the picture is out of focus.)

2) If I catch a model blinking, talking, etc, I delete it. Or save it into my bloopers album if it's funny enough...XD

This system helps me rule out the photos I really don't need to keep, but the pictures that are halfway between good and system-breaking are the ones I spend hours over, tapping the desk and thinking 'Yes or no?' endlessly.

If you have any suggestions for my system, I'd love to know. :)

A Child's Purity

This is one of my favorites of her from my Fantasia photoshoot. (I also did the makeup on her face, using eye-liner pencils.)
Cropped and isolated colors to increase their saturation by about 30%.

Step Into the Light

This is the same area where I took the picture of the sandals (Sandals Post).
I like how mysterious this one turned out, and the color of the streetlights was lovely.

Note: This picture was not taken with my camera. Credit to Heather and Matt Cosgrave for letting me take some shots with their professional camera.
Slightly increased color saturation.

Lake Russel

My friends and I visited Lake Russel in Georgia last July to celebrate the 4th. It was really an amazing trip. I took tons of pictures at the dam site, where the massive lake spread for miles, being all you could see on the horizon. With the sun just going down, it was the perfect time to get some amazing shots. This is my favorite of them all.
I loved editing this one. To get this amazing color I increased the contrast and increased all color saturation by 80-100%.

Depending on the original state of a photo, increasing saturation can work really well, if the photo starts out having a lot of colors to work with. The sunset may not have looked as richly colorful as in my edited piece, but being at the lake and seeing the sun setting with my own eyes was more incredible than any photo edit.

I just changed the entire format and layout of this blog. :D I love my new layout because now I can post my photos much larger. You can still click to view full-size, which I recommend simply for the better view.

ಠ_ಠ

All right, I usually manage to overuse the keyboard face 'XD', but I've found a new companion to overuse, and he is the internet meme of disappointment or disbelief, according to KnowYourMeme.com.

I wanted to put him in my blog so badly that I dug through all my photos until I found the perfect one to portray the meaning of ಠ_ಠ.

Behold, the best expressions of me and my friends ever captured:

BTW, I love these guys. <3
